Part Counting with Lasers

This is a design made to count parts at high speed with a laser:

5S Methods

5SThe five basic principles of the 5S methodology are quite simple.  They are:

  1. Sort
  2. Set in Order
  3. Shine
  4. Standardize
  5. Sustain

There are several new iterations being promoted around the original 5S concept.  Now we have Lean 5S and most recently 6S which is simply the addition of safety as a component.  These are simply marketing methods which also detract from the core values of the 5S process.  Don’t misunderstand, lean values and safety are essential and important components of the work place.  A true understanding of 5S addresses the integration of these concepts within 5S instead of adding yet another flavor of the month.

Those Evil Incandescent Bulbs

light bulbHave you noticed that you can still find incandescent bulbs at the store?  That’s because the law passed several years ago to “outlaw incandescent” didn’t really do so.  The law simply stated a requirement of 25% less energy consumption for the same amount of light.  By changing the gases used in the bulb manufacturers were able to achieve this level of performance.  So if you really have your heart set on the incandescent you can still find it.

The timing of these improved energy requirements also presented and opportunity to launch CFL’s which have proven to be a disaster on several levels.  Their poor light, cancer causing potential and mercury waste will ultimately lead to their demise.

Warm LED’s will likely win the long term consumer battle of the bulbs as their quality improves, competition increases, and prices come down.

We utilize LED’s in many ways to solve custom lighting issues on machines.  They provide many great options for reduced power consumption, reduced heat, customization and miniaturization.

Water Based Coolants

Do you still use traditional cutting oils in any of your material removal operations?  Are you having difficulty holding tight tolerances?  Consider switching to water miscible coolants.  They will do a much better job of reducing the heat build up of the part and allow for greater process capability.

They will also require more maintenance than good old cutting oils, but the benefits are worth it.

Poka Yoke

The term Poka Yoke simply refers to mistake proofing.

These small parts will occasionally roll a burr around themselves during their manufacture.  This in turn will cause a problem with jamming automated feeding machines downstream.  A mechanical gating system was designed and manufactured which sorts these defective parts out before they can become a problem.
